Open Question: Transfering probation from Northern California to Southern California?

My boyfriend is on probation (felony drug possession) and we live in the bay area. I am moving back to San Diego and we both want him to go with me. We have a son together, and our son will be going with me. Will this give his probation officer more of a reason to approve his moving? I was told we had to be married to make more of a case, is this true? I know the first thing he has to do is to talk to his PO, but what is the process, how long does it take?
