Open Question: is it legal for a school to keep you after school hours claiming its "mandatory"?

So my school makes you stay after school for not doing homework or getting less than a B on a test an if you dont go you get suspended! i already know 2 teachers and school security that says its ILLEGAL to do that i go to Bonita Vista Middle school in san diego california. im sure there is more staff members that know its illigal but wont speak up. i dont know what to do about this someone help! im to busy to stay after school for liitle things like that........and i do have good grades i know they keep people after a lot but they have a choice in this instance we have no choice...
